TT Parliament & CIWiL work together to mobilize Young Women in Leadership (YWiL)

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – 3 December, 2019 (TTO): Lady A. Anande Trotman-Joseph, CIWiL President, representatives from ParlAmericas and members of the CIWiL’s Regional Board of Directors met with the Honourable Bridgid Annisette-George, MP Speaker of the House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago and members of staff of the Parliament on Friday 29 November, 2019, to discuss matters related partnering to implement CIWiL’s inaugural Young Women in Leadership (YWiL) programme.

YWiL is an initiative that will bring together representatives from across Trinidad and Tobago and provide an opportunity for networking and skills development. It is envisaged that this will foster young women’s access to opportunities in leadership and decision-making in political and public spheres. Young women in leadership, experience discrimination based both on their age and gender. There are also critical gaps in funding and resourcing for skills development and mentorship opportunities, that can impact their ability to realize their full potential as leaders. This initiative will be implemented in partnership with the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago and ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality in promoting civil society participation and gender mainstreaming across legislative work. CIWiL is cognizant of the array of issues, that can impact women. This partnership is key to promoting women’s representation and leadership in all spheres.

CIWiL believes that investing in women’s leadership requires a lifecycle approach and key to this is engaging and strengthening young women’s access to leadership through capacity building initiatives. YWiL TT aligns to this perspective and seeks to create an environment to strengthen and enable access to transformational leadership approaches through training, sensitisation and mentorship.
