Social Media as a tool in Eliminating Gender-based Violence in Jamaica
The Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL), a regional NGO and key implementing partner for UN Women under the Spotlight Initiative is hosting a free virtual forum to discuss how social media can be utilized as a tool in preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Jamaica. The forum takes place on Wednesday 21st September, 2022 at 5:00pm to 6:30pm (JAM), and will bring together leading voices in Jamaica such as Dr Terri-Karelle Reid, Carla Moore, Rushane Campbell, and Dr Nadeen Spence.
The virtual forum, in the first instance, seeks to facilitate a conversation that interrogates prevalent social and cultural attitudes towards gender roles, acceptance of unequal gender power relations and the normalisation of VAWG by men and women. The forum is intended to be highly interactive by engaging the panelists and audience on how social media has fueled or called out these attitudes and practices, and discuss collective action on this important public issue.
The Forum will conclude with the launch of a social media campaign, which invites participants to take to and strategically utilize their social media platforms to commit to, and call for action to prevent VAWG in Jamaica.
All Jamaicans, and persons across the Caribbean region with an interest in social media, gender equality and ending VAGW are welcome to join this important discussion. The forum will be streamed live via Zoom, and CIWiL’s facebook and Zoom platforms.
