Newest CIWiL National Chapter formed in Belize

Belmopan, Belize – 4 December, 2020 (BZE): The Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL) is pleased to announce the establishment of the CIWiL Belize National Chapter on 27 November, 2020. The Belize Chapter is the 6th National Chapter established as part of the country level network of women committed to advancing women’s leadership and gender equality throughout the Caribbean.

CIWiL Regional Board President, Lady A. Anande Trotman-Joseph welcomed and congratulated CIWiL’s newest national chapter. The President noted in her remarks “our Belizean sisters have been underrepresented in leadership and decision making for too long.” She also issued a call to action stating “Let us all work together in solidarity; let us support each other. It is left to us to challenge the status quo. Let us be the change agents for a more inclusive, empowered and equitable society”.

The CIWiL Belize National Chapter Executive is comprised of:

  • Valerie Woods – Chairperson,
  • Deborah Mencias-McMillan – Vice Chairperson,
  • Chelsea Galvez – Secretary/ Coordinator,
  • Tracie Jenkins – Treasurer and
  • Brittney Galvez – Public Relations Officer

CIWiL has active national chapters in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. We work collectively across the region to:  

  1. implement projects/ initiatives that advance women’s transformational leadership;
  2. promote women’s increased participation, leadership and decision-making in politics and public life, civil society and the private sector, and
  3. promote participatory, people-centred development, based on principles of human rights, gender equality and equity, economic and social justice, and environmental sustainability, and
  4. build partnerships across political and professional lines toward the common aim of eliminating gender inequality.
