According to the study “Digital rural gender divide in Latin America and the Caribbean” (2020), in 17 out of the 23 countries analysed, women are less likely to own a mobile phone compared to their male counterparts and low-educated women living in rural areas are also the least “connected” group (IDB 2020). Worldwide, women are underrepresented in ICT jobs, top management and academic careers; Men are four times more likely than women to be ICT specialists. At 15 years of age, on average, only 0.5% of girls wish to become ICT professionals, compared to 5% of boys. (OECD 2018).
